Anyone using a Dynasplint knee flexion splint
« on: December 03, 2007, 07:35:37 AM »
The dealer says it is the most painful of the knee braces. It is designed to place a constatn torgue pressure to pull your knee in to a constant state of flexion while you are relaxing..such as while you sleep. I have not made a night without major help...some time a club to the head would be more appealing....it is barbaric....but I have gained 10 degrees since using it over 3 weeks. It is designed for stiff knees to help stretch the soft tissue to release scar tissue. You have to gradually build up to where you are able to wear it 8 hrs and when you are no longer stiff for at least an hour after removing the brace....you tighten up the struts and the pressure gets greater. I am trying to do it with tens, ice and lots of drugs. I feel it is helpinng but it just hurts like hell.. Was just wondering if anyone else has heard of or used before. In sight would be very welcome. I have 4 small children and with all the braces, exercises, and devices I have to do in a day, it is just starting to wear a bit thin.

Thanks,
Kelli

Hello Kelli,

I used a Dynasplint very early in my arthrofibrosis odyssey. My knee was already really bound down with scar tissue by the time my OS prescribed it-- my total ROM was 38 to 68-- so it really didn't do much for me other than keep me awake all night. Dr. Steadman often has his patients use a Joint Active System (JAS) brace after surgery. While I was rehabbing in CO, I met a few people who were using them. I think a few people on the arthrofibrosis board who have used them as well. Some of the other scar tissue specialists use a device called the ERMI flexionator. Both the JAS and ERMI are used a couple times a day for a fairly short period-- I think around 30 minutes.

I think pain meds and TENS are a good idea when using the Dynasplint, but I wouldn't use ice when you have it on. Ice causes the tissues to tighten up and you really want them to be as elastic/ flexible as possible when you are using the Dynasplint. If you're not already using a sleep-aid, like Ambien, you may want to ask your OS or GP for a prescription. Getting adequate rest is really important.

I went through a few AF surgeries and rehab was practically a full-time job. I can't even imagine how you are managing rehab while caring for 4 small children. You have a lot of you're plate.

I'm glad you're making some progress.

Take care,

Jaci

I was told today that I will have to have a closed manipulation.. I am very scared!! I had my ACL surgery last Nov. and I am still unable to walk normal.. I was told that I would be fitted for a dynamic extention brace. Does any-one have any info on this thing? It is now summer time and I don't want to be stuck in the house laying around with this thing on all day!! But, If that's what it takes to make life better,, Well i guess that's what I gotta do..

Like you I had a closed manipulation after my acl surgery. I had my last summer. I had the same thought about being stuck in a brace.  I wore my brace for 30 minutes about 5-6 times a day.  After my manipulation i thought great its going to be normal boy was i shocked.  I felt soo much worse after it and was in alot of pain.  Things gradually got better i mean gradually. I had the manipulation july 5 and i didnt regain most of my flexion and extension until november. So it will take awhile. be patient.  i still have a loss of flexion and extension but i'm taking what i can get. I used both the JAS brace and dynasplit at the same time, I had a nice assortment.  I liked the dynasplit a whole lot better.  Walking backwards on the treadmill really helped too.

best of luck its not easy.

I am currently wearing an extension brace - very similar to the Dynasplint/JAS braces. I am trying to wear it ALL the time - as that's what the PT wants me to do. But I keep waking up in the middle of the night and cannot get back to sleep with it on due to pain. I am at over 35 degrees extension loss and I am not sure if its making a whole lot of difference to me but Ill keep wearing it and letting it push for my extension. I can walk in mine which is lucky otherwise Id go out of my mind!. I know quite a few people here have had success with ithese braces - good luck with the MUA and brace wearing.
