Milly Yup, that is true about the thyroid. I think I was assuming they had ruled that out as not being the underlying cause. Okeedokee...maybe not! How long have you had the goiter? When it's slight, it can go undetected by patients...they just don't notice it. Maybe it became larger now? Fingers crossed that the supplements help that hypokalemic state. They'll be running labs in a few weeks, right? Oh yeah...I hear ya on those teens! Got 2 of them myself and all that drama...jeez! They "can" be great helpers, though. Hopefully yours will help you, too! Sometimes I've gotta bribe 'em but, it works! I'm just trying not to impede too much into their lives/activites but Hey! They need to eat and it's their laundry that needs washin' too! I just wish my son's never-ending knee issues would hurry up and get better. We were told it "should" stop when he's doing growing. Now, he has chondromalacia. Summer might be a good time for you to go through something like this...especially with the never-ending winter we're having. Hope it all works out the best for you and your family! Don't work too hard! Heather

Hi Heather,
I think the doc has ruled out the thyroid, not sure I've completely written it off myself. I noticed some swelling on the 7th of March. It felt like something was pressing on my windpipe. I went to ER late in the day because I could breathe fine and swallow ok, so was not panicing. I could feel the right side was larger than the left myself. It was not huge, but enough to be a bother. It still seems a bit larger to me, so will have him have a look at it again when I see him. I don't have the chokeing sensation any more, thank goodness, it drove me nuts! The only thing they looked at is the TSH which was 2.5 and the ultrasound. I will ask if it would hurt to check the t3 and t4 as well as the antibody test. At least I will know all the blood tests were done. It suprizes me how often they rely on only the TSH to rule out thyroid. The only test ordered was the potassium test.
Drama is right! EVERYTHING is major drama. Get off the computer, I was already on....blah blah blah. I sometimes threathen to cuff them together and watch them try to work it out. I change my mind though, don't want to clean the mess.

Thanks Karen,
I'm just very disappointed, but would rather go into surgery as healthy as I can be. Surgery can make your potassium low too, so don't want to start low! I see the doc the 25th and will see what he has to say.

Hi Milly! Just checking in to ask how you're feeling. Hope that fatigue isn't getting the best of you. Are you sleeping ok ? Suprisingly, sawbones didn't recheck my labs to make sure my hemoglobin came back up. Maybe he forgot. Anemia compounded by post-op "blah" has kicked my fanny, too. I can definitely side with wanting to be as healthy as you can going in for this. It'll drain you. Another thing I'd recommend is getting those quads as strong as possible. Not sure if you're lacking now but, mine are buckling with putting weight on them. I haven't received full permission to do it yet but, I feel the need. Make sense? The longer you go without walking independent of walking aides, the worse strength deficits become. I'm also VERY concerned about still having so much inflammation at 7 weeks (today) post-op. Maybe my PT was right about possible AF? Try to keep your chin up ok? I'm glad they found this before surgery day. I can definitely say the PFJR is worth doing so, it's something to look forward to when you're cleared. Sawbones will be waiting for you! Take care and chat with ya later... Heather

Hey Heather, Thanks for the thoughts. I think a bit problem with the fatigue is because I have trouble sleeping. I was given some Ambien, it helps me sleep better and not much groginess in the morning, but want to cry my eyes out all day. That makes getting to work and doing my job very tough. I was balling because my 7-up fizzed over when I openend it the other day. Not really worh an hours cry for sure. Now if it blew up my computer, then maybe more worth the tears. I was trying to explain why I canceled surgery to my husband. I got so fed up with him, some meds take more that 15 minutes to work! Some take quite a while to build up and do their job. If the meds aren't helping we will need to try a different direction and that would be too close to surgery day. Rather free it up for someone that can use it. I can't wait until I can get in there and get rid of the painful kneecap! I tried to given them away, but no one would take them. Wonder why? I am trying to do what exercises I can. When the pain is low I can do stairs normally, so I think the strength is not too bad. It's usually the pain that inhibts me. The left will give out too, but that's usually when the kneecap decides to take a detour when I'm try to use it. Hope the inflammation gets better for you. it may still be getting hot 'cause of all the work that was done. A lot of soft tissue stuff, so that may still be getting angry. Got to go for now, but will chat later. Milly

Trace,
I know how busy it can get. I am doing great with my PFJR. I am pain free for the first time in many years. Now I just got to get the right knee up to speed and I'll be all set.

Trace,
The left knee is all set (some strengthening yet), but good to go. The right will need work down the road. It does not hurt as bad as the left one did. I am trying to hold off on that one for a bit. At least until it bothers me more. I know it will need something done, just have not decided on a when.

Hi Milly~ I'm glad you got some good parts! No pain at all? WOW! I'm so very happy for you! Ya see what happens when our masterminded knee guru goes to work? Next time, we won't feel so scared when he does our right kness, huh? I'm still a bit squeemish in having to back in again but, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. Guess these TTT screws move around a bit and traumatize the bone...that explains the ongoing tibial pain and it does radiate down to the ankle. Patellofemoral pain is better than pre-PFJR but, it's not quite made it to mild pain yet...I ran out of pain meds and ached really bad ALL night long! UGH! Do you think the patella can still be hurting from the original fracture (which was horribly severe) even though it contains a prosthesis now? There are alot of pain receptors in bone. Sooo...I have a question. As your left knee is doing better, does the right one feel better in having it's assistant back in business? I hope so! Conserve it in natural stats as long as ya can. I hope we both can keep our PFJR's for many, many years to come before revision. Heather

Hey Heather,
Good to hear from you. I would think the screws should come out if they are causing issues. Not that anyone wants to back under the knife, but .. I think it is a reasonable assumption that the kneecap is still pretty achy with everything it's been through. There was some left to sitck the prothesis too, so it is bound to hurt some. I will get a deep ache if the knee gets too cold, so I would think yeah there are still some pain nerves alive in there. At least the ache is not near what is was, just a reminder there is metal in there.
The right knee is much better (and the back and the hip are also happier). It still hurts, just not 24/7 anymore. It will probably get there again as it's trashed too. I will hold out as long as I can with it, but I know it will need something done eventually. I certianly hope the PFJR will last me a while. I have heard some needing revision in 3 years! I am hoping that those are folks who had arthritis in the other compartments that was not bad enough to take care of but then just took over after the PFJR. I know it can happen, but I am hoping not. The rest of the knee looked good, so it should be ok.
It's too bad there was so much else going on in that knee for you. I think it would be much better by now if there were not so many extras there. I also think you still have a ways to go to get strong again and I hope the CRPS gets into remission so you can get going more on that part. Darn nerves!
Milly
