Dawn,

I found that 200 mg per day was the dose that really relieved pain.
Is there concern where you are about the possible adverse effect on the heart?

Nancy, thanks for your quick reply.  My problem with celebrex is not heart related-  Nov 2004 I had a gastric bypass surgery and because of that I cannot take NSAIDs and have to be very careful with anything that can cause GI problems.  My GI surgeon gave me the okay to try the celebrex at the lowest effective dose.  My only other option is narcotic.  I lost 120 lbs with the gastric-bypass and although I still suffer I know that I suffer less with out those extra pounds!  I just double  checked my script and it is 100mg.  I wonder if it would be worth it to go up to 200mg and lessen my dependence on the norco.  I usually take norco 1-2x per day but try to never take it before 4:00p.  Just a weird stab at not becoming addicted. - Dawn

If it were me, I'd ask my doctor about going to 200mg of Celebrex and get off the norco. A lot depends upon your age and heart risks. They don't really know what the effect is. Everything is a trade off, of course. But no one should have to live in constant pain. I couldn't stand the narcotic painkiller because it made me horribly constipated.

Good for you losing 120 lbs!

I have been taking Celebrex for years.  I feel any prescription drug is a risk.  I also take extra strength Tylenol in between the Celebrex.  Please check first with your doctor before taking Tylenol and Celebrex.
I also take Pepcid to help stomach due to Celebrex.

Hi Mist,

Yes, there are risks with all meds. EvenTylenol taken over a long period has been known to cause liver faillure.  I am leery about Celebrex because heart disease runs in my family. I guess the amount of risk we can accept has to be individually evalated.

For what it's worth, I used to take celebrex and thought it wasn't really doing much. Then I went off it and wow, it was helping the pain a lot. Since I am 62, I'm afraid to take it now because it may be associated with heart problems which run in my family, but that's another story. In the U.S., vioxx and bextra have been taken off the market for the heart problems but celebrex remains available, so I guess there is less risk there.

I guess I'm not using that medicine but i just want to know what is the common effect of the medicine on some heart problems??

I just started celebrex 6 days ago.  I don't notice any difference, in fact, at times it seems worse.  Does it take a bit of time to get into your system before it begins working?  This is a one month trial for me.  If it doesn't work, I'm going for the synviesc shots.

i have been on celebrex (200mg once a day) for 4 years. when i am having a flare of my arthritis my rhuemy lets me bump up the doseage to 200mg twice a day. he leaves it to me as to how and when to increase the dosage. i am also on anti-tnf therapy and i am able to continue my celebrex alsong with the drug i am on right now. good luck. celebrex is a good drug.
