Celebrex is an anti-inflammatory. It's not supposed to mess up your stomach like other inflammatories. However, I found that it messed me up worse than the NSAIDS. Made me sick and didn't work either. My husband takes the stuff for his arthritis and has had good results.

I LOVE my celebrex.  It has taken my pain levels down to a more bearable place, and the best part is that the medicine stays in your system.  So if you miss a dose, it doesn't start to hurt again right away.

I take 200mg twice a day, but really only remember the second dose about half the time.  After my lateral release, going on Celebrex enabled me to stop taking my other pain meds for several months, until I had other complications and surgeries.  For now, the Celebrex takes my pain from a steady 7/10 to about 4-5/10, with higher spikes depending on whether I'm having a good day or not.  Not perfect, but better than the alternative.

I tried Vioxx and Bextra, but they both made me sick and didn't provide the level of relief that Celebrex does.

Good luck, I hope it works as well for you as it does for me.

I have had very good results with Celebrex.  I take it for knee arthritis.  I take 200mg a day.  Once you take it a couple of weeks, you might be able to take it as needed.  I have found Celebrex, unlike VIOXX, stays in my system.  Voixx quit working after about 5 hours.  I can take Celebrex about 4 times a week, on a good week, and still have consistant pain relief.

Hi Emily

I took celebrec for almost 3 years with good results.  I started at 200mg once daily then half way through was put up to 200 mg twice daily and by the last month it was not working well for me anymore so my GP switched me to bextra.  I loved the celebrex! I am debating going on it agian now since i have been off it for a month adnsee if it works again.  im not too fond of hte bextra it works wonders for my knee but is not helping anything else at all :(  I didnt have arthritis it was just used for swelling and pain mainly i think.

The bextra didnt have an effect on my knee, and it made me feel sick, but so far Celebrex seems a lot better!

Does anyone know if you can get Celebrex in the UK? If so is it prescription only or can you buy it from a chemist?

While I love Celebrex, I take it sparingly so as to not expose myself to as yet unknown complications. I do take Alieve (naproxen sodium) frequently...probably three times per week for the pain and all that. Caution is the watchword here.

For what it's worth, I used to take celebrex and thought it wasn't really doing much. Then I went off it and wow, it was helping the pain a lot. Since I am 62, I'm afraid to take it now because it may be associated with heart problems which run in my family, but that's another story. In the U.S., vioxx and bextra have been taken off the market for the heart problems but celebrex remains available, so I guess there is less risk there.

I take Celebrex 1x per day, I think only 100mg - I cannot take NSAIDs but have been given okay to take Celebrex as long as it doesn't upset my delicate GI system...it helps but mostly I take norco.  I take the Celebrex every day in the morning and the norco just as needed.  I like the celebrex but think that I am not taking a high enough dosage.  Does anyone else take such a low dose?  Do they find it works or that they need to take the 200mg dose?  thanks - dawn

Dawn,

I found that 200 mg per day was the dose that really relieved pain.
Is there concern where you are about the possible adverse effect on the heart?

All the best,

Nancy, thanks for your quick reply.  My problem with celebrex is not heart related-  Nov 2004 I had a gastric bypass surgery and because of that I cannot take NSAIDs and have to be very careful with anything that can cause GI problems.  My GI surgeon gave me the okay to try the celebrex at the lowest effective dose.  My only other option is narcotic.  I lost 120 lbs with the gastric-bypass and although I still suffer I know that I suffer less with out those extra pounds!  I just double  checked my script and it is 100mg.  I wonder if it would be worth it to go up to 200mg and lessen my dependence on the norco.  I usually take norco 1-2x per day but try to never take it before 4:00p.  Just a weird stab at not becoming addicted. - Dawn

Dawn,

If it were me, I'd ask my doctor about going to 200mg of Celebrex and get off the norco. A lot depends upon your age and heart risks. They don't really know what the effect is. Everything is a trade off, of course. But no one should have to live in constant pain. I couldn't stand the narcotic painkiller because it made me horribly constipated.

Good for you losing 120 lbs!

Best of luck,

Nancy

I have been taking Celebrex for years.  I feel any prescription drug is a risk.  I also take extra strength Tylenol in between the Celebrex.  Please check first with your doctor before taking Tylenol and Celebrex.
I also take Pepcid to help stomach due to Celebrex.

Good luck.

Hi Mist,

Yes, there are risks with all meds. EvenTylenol taken over a long period has been known to cause liver faillure.  I am leery about Celebrex because heart disease runs in my family. I guess the amount of risk we can accept has to be individually evalated.

Good luck!

I just started celebrex 6 days ago.  I don't notice any difference, in fact, at times it seems worse.  Does it take a bit of time to get into your system before it begins working?  This is a one month trial for me.  If it doesn't work, I'm going for the synviesc shots.

i have been on celebrex (200mg once a day) for 4 years. when i am having a flare of my arthritis my rhuemy lets me bump up the doseage to 200mg twice a day. he leaves it to me as to how and when to increase the dosage. i am also on anti-tnf therapy and i am able to continue my celebrex alsong with the drug i am on right now. good luck. celebrex is a good drug.
