I went to PT yesterday and started out at 30 degrees and got to 45.  It felt good to work it.  I just can't wait to get back to normal!!  I want to drive and walk.  This is week 7.  I hope to be driving in a couple weeks!!

I did all kinds of stretching and a few leg lifts.  It didn't hurt too much.  So much is relative after surgery, or just a dislaocation!  PT seems simple!  Plus, there is a pleasant end result!!

Nine weeks

It will be nine weeks tomorrow and my knee feels very strong.  It is very nice not to have the feeling it will dislocate.  The main problem now is ROM.  I only got to 54 degrees Tuesday.  It is pretty frustrating that it won't cooperate with what I want it to do!!  The quad is weak, but not totally gone.  After I stretched, I got to lift weights some.  It felt very good to get the circulation going.

The big news is...  I finally can DRIVE!!!!!  I started yesterday.  I also take the immobilzer off while in my classroom  and at home.  I try to stretch the muscles all day.  It feels good.  I don't feel like I am going to hurt anything.

At home and at PT I try to stretch so I feel like I can't possibly go any further.  I realize people say it comes by degrees, but this literally is one degree at a time!!

Driving, walking without the immobilizer, lifting weights... I feel like I have made some improvement in the last two weeks!

By the way, while on spring break I got to go in a pool.  That felt really great on my knee.  It always felt loose and relaxed after I got out, even though I pushed it to the limit while stretching.  Maybe a pool is in my future????!!!

Week 12 is Friday

I am at 90 degrees ROM after I work at it in PT.  I can lift weights, do some squats, and complete other exercises.  I saw the dr. last Thursday and he said I was where I need to be.  He told me to take walks.  That has worked well.  I don't like walking the same day I go to PT.  Then I get sore!  Recovery is going much slower than I thought it would.  The ROM is holding me back.  When I can ride the bike I think it will go much faster!

I need my other knee done, but I think that will be next year's adventure!

Good job tiggerluvr! (Decided to change up your screen name for ya  :) )  Thanks for the week 12 update.  I'm really looking forward to the day I can take a walk!

So, here's a general question on the ROM thing, do you have a method for measuring that at home?  Or is it only when you're at PT?  I'm picturing a huge protractor next to my knee for measuring.  ;D

hi tigger,
i strongly recommend walking aswell.if you read my diary you will see that my knee has improved greatly since i started going for walks,my knee feels very good when i walk and i am feeling alot more confident in it.
i can walk for much longer periods now and am starting to trust my leg more as up to a few weeks back it was regulary giving way on me due to the fact my muscles have aprophied.
as my rom has improved alot since my leg feels stronger even going up and down stairs has seemed easier.
the only thing i do not feel confident in is trying to FWB on my bad leg only (other one off the ground) and bending it like im crouching as my bad leg is still so weak i know i would collapse!! (it is fine if im stood straight on using both legs!)

keep us posted how you are getting on!!

claire

ps what exercises are you doing at pt? i have just started a gym programme,my ROM is around 120-125 degrees now.

As for the ROM - they do measure with a protractor at the PT!!

I am mostly stretching at PT - wall slides, PT manipulation.  I also do leg presses with weights, squats on the wall and off the stepper.  He tries to combine strengthening and stretching with an emphasis on stretching!!

shorty - I am so glad you got the ROM to start the work out.  I can't wait.  Maybe next week!!  I am going up the stairs, but down is very difficult if I use both legs.  I CAN do it, it's just very slow!!

Thanks for the encouragement.  It's such a long process, but I do see progress every week.  That tells me I will be out from under this soon!

hi there!!
you are so right about it being a slow process i never realised how slow it would be to get back to anywhere like normal again!!
i've learnt abit of patience since my op!!
it sounds as though you are doing really well!!
your PT stuff sounds very similar to what i have been doing.
once i was able to manage the bike everything got easier,i can come down stairs easier now,i sometimes get very stiff days though where i feel they are difficult again.
take care and keep going you will get there!!

Surgery was three months ago yesterday and I finally got around on the bike yesterday!!!  I haven't been that excited to ride a bike since I first learned how!  It felt loosened up last night, much better!  I'm glad the weather has been getting nicer - now I can walk and bike ride in the great outdoors!  There is light at the end of the tunnel!

15 weeks ago I had all that surgery done.  I can now ride a bike!!!  My ROM is pretty good, still stiff at times.  All is coming along.  The strength has a LONG way to go, but I can see good progress every week.  I will probably be in PT atleast another month, then I will continue on my own.
