Jason,

I am curious to know how you are getting on.   I, too am a golfer and had microfracture surgery 2 wks ago...  I was told to be non-weightbearing for 4 wks and possibly on the driving range with short irons in 2 months..   I am clinging to that hope!   But since you had your surgery in early Jan., am wondering what your doc has told you about swinging a golf club..     ???

I am also a golfer and had microfracture in Oct '04 (large lesion on weight bearing spot). I asked about playing golf and my surgeon looked at me weird and said "lets get you walking first..."
Anyway, I think mine failed and there is no way I could swing anything other than a wedge now. I am getting a second opinion on the 7th to see whats up. I personally will not have another microfracture even if they recommend it...
Good luck!

UofRSpider,
Thanks for sharing..  I am distressed to hear that your microfracture back in October did not work and you cannot swing anything more than a wedge!!!!   YIKES!   today is our 'opening day' tourn. at my golf club here in northern virginia and it is gorgeous weather for it so I am really bummed --- the first time I have not played in it in many years.....    I have a question for you -- what was your rehab like?  how long did you stay NWB?   when you say large lesion - how large??   I don't know how big my lesion was, that will be a question I'll ask when I see my OS next week.

My lesion was this large (whatever it means!): My original MRI stated that the abnormality measures 1.5 craniocaudad x 1.3 AP x 1.2 cm transerse, on the medial femoral chondyle (spelling?).
I was NWB for apporximately 7 full weeks and partial with a cane for 2-3. I continued to use the cane on and off even until today for long walks. I cannot run at all. I actually ran 2 miles 4 days prior to my October '04 surgery.
Regarding rehad...mu OS had me do leg lifts from the start and simple flex exercises. I then got a DonJoy unloader brace in week 4. The swelling finally stated to go down in week 4 or so. I hit the gym starting in week 7 and did stationary bike and some gentle swimming. I currently do an elliptical and a stationary bike.
I am concerned that I may have avascular necrosis though...That was my current possible diagnosis from several weeks ago...(and that the microfracture thinned out). I have a second opinion set up for this Thursday...will update!
Golf is impossible now....I am also bummed!

UofRSpider,
geez, that is terrible...   I was told no running for at least 6 months..   That is okay with me since that contributed to this whole problem.   My OS cleared me for swimming less than a week after surgery and also stationary biking 3x/day ..   I don't know the size of my lesion so will find out when I see him.      What makes you think you have avascular necrosis?   Please let me know what the second opinion says on Thursday!    I will send good thoughts your way.........         am gripping a golf club every day so I don't forget how..........   ;D
the elliptical doesn't bother your knee at all???

No the elliptical does not...weird. Regarding the necrosis...my OS told me he thinks I have it (thus the reason for the second opinion). My original MRI (pre-surgery) and my new MRI (post) both show a large spot or lesion on the bone. It is unchanged after 6 months (it actually may be larger).

on a happier note...darn it all...I bought a new PING putter (craz-e) this summer and only played a few rounds with it...err

Hi Kgolfs

I was interested to read that you were cleared for swimming by your OS.  I was told no swimming for 6 weeks and no breast stroke legs to be done for 6 months!  Did your OS say the same to you re the breaststroke legs? I spose you are a 'front crawl' man!

Sorry to hear that you may suffer AVN. I had ACL recon but now the knee is painful. I had my x ray last month and it showed that there was a black spot on it. Then I went for MRI which showed a negative result.

My Dr said if I really suffered from it, an easier surgery like drilling can be done for it. Bone grafting is an alternate choice. What surgery does your OS suggest you?

hi sheilauk,

yes my OS said I could do whatever I wanted to in the pool....   so I do 10 min. of walking in the deep end w/the aqua jogger vest then i do the breast stroke (with a modified kick) and I do the 'front crawl' but can't do that too much b/c of my left shoulder so that's why i mix in the breast stroke...   nothing I do in the pool feels bad on my knee so far..    I see my OS tomorrow so I plan on asking if I should have been breast stroking all along....
