pain and discomfort 8 weeks post meniscectomy
« on: January 15, 2007, 07:13:26 PM »
I had arthroscopic surgery 8 weeks ago for a medial meniscus tear.  The OS removed small piece and said everything else looked great - no arthritis, no further damage.  He said to wait 2 weeks before starting any kind of weight resistance or impact-type of rehab. but after that, I could use my own comfort level to judge my progression through rehab., and he didn't discourage me from running.  I started my rehab. very carefully with the elliptical - beginning with low resistance and increasing when I felt I could.  I then started a slow walk/run routine and, although I felt some weakness and had some minor swelling afterward, I didn't feel like I was overdoing it.  Last week, I completed the Disney HM; however, I didn't run for the entire 13 miles.  I started with a run/walk and then walked the last 5 miles.  My knee was in terrible pain at the end.  Now, a week later, that "terrible pain" is gone, but I have definite weakness and, with certain movements (side to side), there's a sharp twinge of pain at the exact site of my original injury.  What do you think?  Could I have retorn my meniscus?  What else could be causing this pain?  Can you tear the meniscus in the same spot - even though it's been removed from that spot?  Could I have done other damage?

I am not experienced in any of this by far, but I would just check with your doctor.  I do know that anything is possible, and maybe you should take it easy on the running until you do get to talk to your doctor?

good luck with it - I hope that I don't have the same problem when I return to running!

I think you did overdo the knee totally. That is a far distance so early after the surgery.
Take it slow and rest and start over with the early rehab exercises.
I don't think you have damaged more, but definately done too much.
Try this routine and if not improving or getting worse.. go back and try get things sorted.

Hi TK5,

Ok you people who like to run are crazy - I'm not sure I'd run if my pants were on fire!!! With that said you should know the most exercise that I do is my PT.  He is actually the only person who I follow orders from (but I'd never tell him that).  I do admire people who are very active and like to run, walking for me is my pleasure.  I agree with Nettan, you overdid the knee.  Let it relax for a bit, but if not better go see your OS, or go see your OS anyway and be sure.  I just had another scope this last Wednesday and as suspected there was another small tear of the medial menscus.  This was not my pain problem but he saw it and removed it.  He did say that although it does not happen without insult you can tear it a little easier now since part has been removed.  I don't know if you have access to a pool but if you like the cardio that running gives you a pool is a great place to exercise.  It will keep the weight bearing off the knee and allow you to have the exercise that you want.

Good luck and please do take it easy.  I'm not a week post but my goal is just to be able to walk the dog again.  We do about 2-3 miles 3-4 times a day.  Its a little hilly so I haven't even taken him out at all yet.

Take care of your knee and ice and rest it.  Good luck and let us know how you're doing.  Deborah

TK5-

How's the knee doing?  Have you had any more pain?  I hope you are doing much better now.

I'm now in physical therapy.  I saw her for the first time yesterday, and she said my mechanics are way off, which is why I'm feeling pain and discomfort.  She's going to help me correct my gait because I've apparently been trying to compensate for my original injury.  I need to strengthen the muscles around my knee and in my quads.  So, that's the plan!  The PT is going to fix me up!
