One Week
« on: October 11, 2006, 01:57:30 PM »
Saw physio that surgeon recommended yesterday and he was surprised that I was using knee brace and two elbow crutches.  He checked out the movement and was happy with it.

He advised me to start doing wall squats and to cut down the crutch use to just one crutch to assist with walking and also to try walking as normally as possible.  He shares a clinic with the OS so said he is going to speak to him about the use of the brace.  Will be interesting to see what occurs on that front as the brace is a bit of a pain.. although it does make it easier walking!

Hehe the day you get off crutches you may realise how much of it is in your head!! At least that is how I felt - I went to one crutch and hobbled around for a bout 5 minutes before I threw that one away too and hobbled around crutchless!

I remember my surgeon telling me that I could walk out of the hospital without crutches the day after surgery - the only things in the way were pain and my brain... but the knee was fine for walking!

The first week is out of the way - and its the worst - it gets alot better from here :)

Just follow your OS/Pts instructions.  Theyll tell you when to ditch your crutches, brace, etc.  Usually you go from brace and two crtuches, to walking with one crutch & brace, to walking without a crutch & just the brace, to walking without the brace.  If youve had meniscus work done as well, its not uncommon to have the brace locked for 4 wks while the meniscus heals up.  The key is to start putting weight on your leg (even if using crutches and a brace), icing, etc....
