My current favourite squat exercise is a sort of pyramid set:
15 x 90lb
15 x 140lb
15 x 180lb
15 x 230lb
15 x 180lb
15 x 140lb
15 x 90lb
(and repeat if I am feeling particularly energetic!)

I find it really works the whole leg and the changing weights give you something else to think about other than the pain  ;D)

Dave
History:
~'01 tore left ACL/anterior lateral meniscal cartilage
Nov. '04 'worsened'
Jul. '05 Arthroscopy to remove 50+% ALM cartilage
Dec. '05 fluid removed from swollen joint
8 May '07 ACLr hamstring graft

Yesterday i did swimming, about 500 meters with only legs, and held floating device with my hands. Then i did about 1 km crawl.
The day before yesterday i visited gym and did about 300 leg extensions or so,with 15 kg-s witn both legs, then hamstring curls with 15 kg-s with both legs(about 150 or so) then i did some usual jumping with my operated leg, like i jumped certain patterns(like side to side, with turns etc) and then with squat machine with weight about 70 kg-s or so,i did like 100 squats.
Today when i cycled home fom school i felt burn in my bad legs quad, which i havent felt since the second surgery, atleast i cant remember.I am at the moment 8.5 months post op.Felt great.

Sep-05 ACL rupture, Medial mensical tear, MCL rupture
Oct-05 Had it all repaired (hamstring graft, meniscal rivet)
-and then-
4.5 Months post-op Snowboarding like a demon
7 Months post-op Successful return to indoor soccer (YEH!)

If i am correct and you mean by kickboarding this thing:

Then i have tried it,before the injury, and it was quite fun.I think it trains also nicely.
I have seen people doing double back flip with this thing, thought i think i wont try this ,atleast not now.

I did no training today, and none yesterday. None all week. Tendonitis. Quads shrinking again.  :-(  :-(
Feb '03 Ladies badminton, bad fall, detached ACL
May '06 - ACL reconstruction & meniscus repair
Complications - swelling, pain, lack of flexion/extension, 50% graft failure
Jan '07 Arthoscopy, debride, removal of adhesions & 50% of graft
Attempting to rebuild muscles so can continue sport & life

Zengirl, its not like you dont do sports and your quads are already shrinking.Even if you walk to some bus station, you train your legs or keep them at the same level.I highly doubt that they waste that fast. Its the plaster which wastes the muscles the fastest ,because there your VMO muscles kinda dont work at all.
Anyway, i am off to swimming today, probably doing about 1 km crawl and 500 meters only with my legs again.

Zen, can you still cycle? how about eliptical? These two would be great to hold you over and maintain quad strength until you see your OS. I wouldn't do nothing... that might make the situation worse, but if the tendon pain is real bad, you may have to wait. I'm thinking of you and praying. Hang in there!

ZG, can you do rehab stretches? something that won't aggravate the tendonitis? isometrics?

Are you just going to lay there in front of the television with a beer in your hand?  ;)

torn RK ACL March 2001, surgery Aug. 14 2006, after 4 knee sprains since Oct. '05.  Allograft, ~40% medial meniscus removed, some wear in the trochlear groove. Everything else looks good.

I didnt do no exercises today, but i played some ping pong with my friends and just kinda tested my knee more seriously.I didnt wear no brace, but my knee really felt great, at that point i really felt that i cant even feel which knee is the operated one.Altough ping pong doesent inlove that much pivoting cutting and stuff like that,it still involves some jumping and cutting edges and stuff like that.It felt pretty nice to be honest, thought my other knee actually hurt more, dont know whats up with that. ::)

Yes I can do stretches and cycling (don't like beer by the way!). I refuse to do nothing as this can't be good for a joint - but I can't do quite a lot of things that I'd like to do. Got a match next week but... going to really struggle with it.

Zen, do you play on a league for pay--money? Could they possibly go without you for a little while. I think that your issue with your knee is that you might be in some vicious cycle of aggravating it and causing it to swell. Once you do that, the muscles shut down, thereby making the rehab less effective. If you could just rest your leg for a good 2 weeks, take the anti-inflammatories and just work on your basic rehab protocol you received right out of surgery, I think you might find that your knee will improve by 50% or more. Then you can gradually add more to your program. Once you do that, you will have good muscle tone and playing on your knee won't aggravate it as much. I feel bad that you are only re-aggravating your knee every time you push the rehab and the badmitton. If they can wait for you to return I think you would better serve your knee by taking good care of it for a little while so that you can put this behind you. At least you know something serious is not wrong, so it must be the way you are rehabbing it that is causing you problems. I really think if you dedicate the next 30 days to this protocol you will be where you should be at your stage of rehab. I have read many posts here where ACL rehab was halted for awhile to stop the cycle of infllammation and pain. It almost always worked. I'm not saying don't do anything, you should still cycle gently and go back to the basic protocol, once swelling goes down really work that extension issue HARD. Good luck, you can do it.

good advice CJ, I think I'm caught in that cycle now. I'm scaling it back to just the basics.....

Dave

Wow. That is quite a heavy workload. Am I right 230lbs is 104kg's? Do you do this free weight with olympic bar or on a machine?

Keep it up.

THANKS
