cycling seems nt to work well for me.....i end up feeling my calves doing the pushing. that'sy i turn to leg extension..but i dun extend my leg fully all the way....

Please ready this post made by a PT who gave very very good tips on how to strengthen the VMO:
http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/KNEEtalk/index.php?topic=34227.msg262222#msg262222

Also in the Kneeinsights section of this web site, Pierluigi Vernetto explains "how he manages to work on the VMO part of his quads despite his sedentary occupation and long hours at the computer":

I am afraid that doesent matter if you extend it all the way or not. Ofcourse, its better that you dont kick your leg straight, that wouldnt be a good idea. But overally the whole consept of  leg extension seems to be a bad idea, altough i always thought that it was the PCL which gets the stress, but people here explained me it was the opposite.
Its true , i also didnt get the burning sensation from cycling, but it has something to do with the fact, that your muscles need to "wake up". When they have done it, you start feeling the burn. Altough its also true, that i also only got the burn from leg extensions. Go figure, how long post op are you? And with what weight you do that?

Im close to 11 weeks post op.....doing abt 20kg.

Zen.  Yes, around a very good local circuit that I've learned between Reigate, Horsham & Dorking. Knocked 11 mins off the previous time for this. I actually did 70 miles last sunday on a group training ride. However, would I continue cycling like this? Probably no, but it has helped a lot & is so user friendly for ACL deficient knees. I'm doing this Reigate to Brussels challenge because my PT recommended me for it & I could see the sense in doing it. It's good to have a challenge, & this one is achievable & I've never done anything remotely like it before. I don't particularly see myself becomijng serious & joining the local cycling club to do 60 mile trips every weekend, but this has worked it's purpose, it has got me fit & back down to a decent weight. I'm so much healthier than I was 10 years ago! That's honestly true. I am a determined character, anyone who knows me will tell you that.

I'll be 9 months post op in early May. I still feel the knee in certain situations but generally feel like I am coming out of the injury period. I rarely use Ice any more. Work has become almost normal, I'm lifting things OK, kneeling OK, doing weighted squats at the gym OK. I have'nt tried pivotal sports yet, but at 48, I've got to accept certain limitations, but my goal is definately to start playing Social Touch Rugby again at the club 12 months on & see where it goes from there. I'll be well happy if I could do that. It's just good for my soul.

I hope you did'nt feel I was too tough with you regarding your own problem, I was just calling it as I saw it. Only you know the answer. You've had a rough deal too, & I genuinely hope you get everything fixed. Hope your partner is as supportive as mine has been.

Thought i would raise this topic up again.
Yesterday i did hundreds of hamstring curls with 20 kg-s and also hundreds of leg presses, not sure about the number, as i wasnt counting. Also upper body training.
Today i did 30 km of biking. And i just realized how great biking actually is to knees and also muscles around the knees, also how much more safer this is. Should have done biking instead of rollerblading from the very first time. Better later than never i guess. My muscles are burning now, something i havent felt for a very long time. Going to include biking to my training from now on.
Weather is also getting warmer, its now over 10 celsius regularly, so its nice to bike now.

Better late than never Henri!!

Seriously, as you've discovered, biking is tremendous for knee rehab. Keep it going you won't regret it for a moment. Might even lead to a new lifestyle?
