What exactly are we straightening anyways, the muscles, the graft itself? It's all so bizarre...

My OS said if I used weights to force it straight then I would be in danger of stretching the graft.

If you just use your own muscles i.e no real force then there would be no danger.  I find but when I gain extension when doing exercises then I lose flexion and vice-versa.  Its starting to even out now though.
07/01 ACL rupture, left knee
08/02 ACL reconstruction (patellar tendon graft)
10/05 Re-tore ACL graft
01/06 Scheduled for ACL revision using hamstring graft

The entire point is to get the muscle control in place to be able to straighten it. Everything else is an aid. I was told to avoid using anything bar muscle control in straightening the leg. The exception to this was prone leg hangs with me on my stomach and my legs hanging off the edge of the bench. I cant remember why I was doing those - but they were in my surgeons protocol!
Sep-05 ACL rupture, Medial mensical tear, MCL rupture
Oct-05 Had it all repaired (hamstring graft, meniscal rivet)
-and then-
4.5 Months post-op Snowboarding like a demon
7 Months post-op Successful return to indoor soccer (YEH!)

Maybe this is off, but I believe if the OS is competent and anchors the graft in the right place with the right tension, you don't need to hang weights off to get extension. Perhaps if the graft is too short, then yeah, they probably do want to stretch it to sort of make due at that point. I'm fortunate I came out of surgery and my leg was at 0 degrees and stayed that way ever since. I only do prone hangs off the bed in the morning because the knee is stiff when I wake. Then, it's only stretching hamstring muscles, I can feel that, similar to the feeling of when you do a figure 4 stretch.
