Has anyone had the Arthrosurface Hemicap? New PKR option
«

Hey, I have been asked to be a lab rat in the clinical trials for the arthrosurface hemicap. It is oked in Europe but in trials here in the US. I am strongly considering this operation. I will schedule it for sometime next month. I have done lots of research but would love to find someone "across the pond" who has already had this surgery. Anyone tried it Yet? IF so, how was your recovery? what kind of rehab?
thanks in advance for reading this.

I was told that it would probably be a good option for me, but I decided to go with what was already in use. I have enough problems with my knee and didn't want to be part of the study for it. I opted for a regular PKR.
I hope that things go well for you.

My friend had the Arthrosurface Hemicap device implanted in his shoulder. The shoulder bothered him terribly for the last three years and was getting ready for a total replacement till he found out about this device. The surgery was in December and the doctor indicated his shoulder was further gone that origionally thought and required major clean-up. By early January, his shoulder was feeling better than is has for over five to seven years. He is allready scheduling to have the other shoulder done within the next six months. At this point he is extremely happy with it. Prior to the surgery he talked to several other patients, one who had surgery on his great toe with the hemicap and one with the shoulder.
It appears that those who have had the surgery become true belivers.
Best of luck

thank you so much for your reply. I have read the testimonials but it is nice to hear about a "real" person. I will get the hemicap in less than two weeks and I am caustiously optomistic. Did your friend have to wait a long time to use the shoulder? If he was feeling better in January, that is wonderful.
thanks again

He stayed in the hospital one night and was moving his shoulder within a day or two. I talked to him this morning and he is actually thankfull to everyone that was involved. It took him about a month to arrange the surgery. The longest wait was for the insurance to approve the procedure.
What part of the country are you from?

Did you decide to go with the Hemicap?
If so, how did it go?
Hope it worked out for you.

Yes, I had the hemicap put in 3 wks ago along with removal of lots of scar tissue. I am FWB as tolerated but was told to still use the crutches to take some weight off of the knee. that is more for the arthrofibosis than the hemicap. The LOA was much more painful than the hemicap so far. I am cautiously optomistic at this point.

Hi
I've only just heard about Hemicap implants and can't find any hospitals/surgeons in the UK that carry out this procedure. I am interested in seeing if my knee and also big toe are suitable for it. It would also help to know where the trials are being carried out, as the hospital involved may be able to give me some information. Any leads would be appreciated.
Thanks

I've seen the x-rays, it looks really great. I would probably do it, as a way to put off TKR for a while. Sadly it wasn't an option for me, I have Patella Femoral Replacement. I did talk with my os about it, he hasn't done one and is wondering about the possibility of loosening of the prosethis. talk it over with your os. Sounds like a good option if you are the right candidate.
Keep in touch.

The hemicap is already approved in Europe and Australia. It is approved in the US for the toe, hip and shoulder. I am in the clinical trials for the knee hemicap. So far, 5 mnths post op, I am definately glad that I had it done. I am not sure but I think that there is a list of Doctors on the website that does the hemicap surgery. If you have any questions, I would be more than happy to answer them.

Thanks for replies. I've found one UK surgeon who uses hemicap but only for hips - not knees or toes. I'd be interested to hear where the trials are being conducted as the people there may have some useful information. Thanks

Have you checked with the arthrosurface website? From what I understand, the clinical trials are over in the UK and it has been approved. Maybe if you contact arthrosurface , they can give you the name of a surgeon near you who uses it. The only clinical trials that i know of are the ones that I am in. They are only for the knee and are here in the US. It is already approved for the hip, toe, and shoulder here in the US. Wish that I could help you some more. I just got lucky that my OS is part of the clinical trial.

I have extreme knee problems also and went through 3 surgerys and saw the article in my doctors office, the cartiledge in my knee is about gone in one spot and from what I have read it seems like a good thing, since I live in Europe I might get a second opinion from another Doctor and try it, because livining with pain every single day really stinks.
