Yak Trax for icy weather
« on: December 14, 2005, 02:05:21 PM »
I swear I don't get a commission.  I have had yak trax for 3 years - my house is on a really steep hill.

If you live anyplace with icy winter weather, I highly recommend these.  They go over any boots and most shoes (not women's dress shoes), and will give you A LOT more confidence and safety on the ice.  They cost less than $20, and can be purchased at most sporting goods stores.  As winter hits, I just wanted to let people know they don't have to be afraid to leave the house.  (And they go on and off easily enough that you can wear them through the parking lot at the store, and take them off to wakl around inside.)  Can't say enough good things about them.  But I do wonder why more doctors don't recommend them.

In case you can't find them, this link brings you to one web retailer - I'm sure you can find others.

Jess,

Thank you for mentioning these again..... I just called the sports shops around here after reading your post and they actually sell them here also.....

It is very slippery around our place and this is a great idea.....  Again thanks..... ~Shade

I got myself a pair and had them shipped over to UK from USA.  Paid about £12 instead of the UK £27 a pair.  The week before they arrived it was really icy by my house :o....on a steep hill.
As soon as they arrived the ice melted and ever since it has been mild and ice-free :-\

I cant wait to try them out. ;D

Keep those feet grippy and have a slip-free winter!!

Jess ~ Thanks for the recommendation of Yak Trax. I did buy some at a local runner's equipment store. The clerk assured me I'd be able to run in snow with them & I assured him I really only wanted to be able to walk safely! I've mentioned them to friends who like me own horses & spend a lot of time outdoors here in New England. Thanks again for suggesting them...Ellie

Just ordered mine so it'll probably end up being mild over here ::) but as everyone is predicting a harsh winter for us in the UK I thought I'd best be prepared!

You won't regret the purchase.  I got mine before the latest knee issues, and used them in the winter.  You'll appreciate them for winters to come.  (Have I mentioned I don't work for the company, or get commissions?  Just love the product!)

Hi Jess,

When I originally posted about the Yak Trax I hadn't heard of anyone that had them, now it seems everyone has them - they're GREAT aren't they - I can't believe just how good they are, I am now walking with confidence in the snow and ice and would certainly recommend them to EVERYONE.  I also reckon they should be on offer in hospitals and pt centres.

natalie -

I actually sent the info about them to my OS - I told him all of his hip and knee patients should have them for winter.  Don't know if they at least tell patients about them, but they definitely should!

I have to get me some of these!!! This is the second winter I'm going to go through while being petrified of falling on the ice because of knee issues! I got some really good boots, but it sounds like these things have much better traction. Thanks for mentioning it!

Hi there:

I work outside in very icy conditions and I have been using a similar thing for about 4 years.  You will never regret buying them.

Take care

I used my Yak Trax Walkers this morning for the first time & they are FABULOUS! We had freezing rain last night turning to rain. And although the temperature's now above freezing, the layer of ice underneath is still there.

I walked down my driveway over wet ice as tho I were on bare ground. I could actually feel them biting right thru the ice. I'm tremendously impressed with the Yak Trax. What a simple way to feel so secure in bad going. Thanks again, Jess...Ellie

Ellie -

Glad you enjoyed a safe walk.  As the calendar insists that winter hasn't even started, we'll need to keep this thread current for all the newbies bound to join us after the snow and ice (and the sports that depend on them) make new kneegeeks.  Not that I'm wishing that on anyone.  Just hoping that the newcomers also find out about yak trax before they go out on icy roads, parking lots, and sidewalks.

Have a great weekend!
Jess

Jess ~ I raved about Yak Trax to a friend in MI & she located a store nearby that sold them. In the midst of a snow storm she drove to the store & purchased two pair - one for herself & one for a SIL who is a police officer in the area. Apparently the store owner says they're fairly flying out of the store - all being sold because someone told someone etc.

I called LL Bean yesterday morning to see if I could order some for friends & their stock of them was gone for the season. But the Yak Trax website does offer the names of retail stores in one's area - for those of you who might be interested. The word is out. <g>...Ellie

Whoo I am going shopping on monday and will have a look in the sports stores.  I LOVE snowy wheather but I am ALWAYS afraid to fall and damage something in my knees or else... Also iut's a great tip when I am working and snow is in the air... I wear sports shoes at work but when there's snow outside you slip soooo easily... luckily we haven't had any calls last time it snowed...

Thanks for the tip!

I just called a local sporting goods sore that has them in stock. I am getting them today.  I am so tired of being afraid of sipping on ice and doing a number on my poor knees
