Diagnose With Arthritis!
« on: October 27, 2005, 10:55:00 AM »
Hello
I wonder if some one could help me regarding the next steps to take
for my troublesome right knee.
The history starting with me complaining to my physio in the autumn of 2002
about a dull ache around my right knee, to my surprise he said I had
inflammation and swelling around this area.
After consultations with my GP and O/S, I was told I needed a Arthroscopy for a torn meniscus,
and all would be fine after this operation.
I had the Arthroscopy in November 2004, removing about 20% of the torn menicus.
Unfortnately after a brief period of euphoria, the pain or aching came back, also the swelling remain.
I decided to see the O/S again who was adamant that there was no problem, and to keep doing
the exercises for the knee.
But my physio was convinced my knee had the signs of Arthrosis, or early signs of Arthritis.
The O/S said this was rubbish, and that there is nothing wrong with my knee.
Anyway to bring you up to date, I recently had a X-Ray, and a second opinion, and have been told that
I have Arthritis under the Patella, so it looks as if my physio was right after all.
Will have a MRI scan tomorrow, I suppose to confirm the extent of the damage.
Not too happy about this situation >:( but just wondering what will be the treatment options open to me
regarding this diagnosis.
Thank you in advance for any advice forthcoming.

Regards
William

Treatment really depends on the extent of the arthritis, if its small enough or not too deep there are procedures like OATS, microfracture etc (have a look further down on the board to see these sections), and also if its confined to one compartment like the patella then another option is to have a partial replacement.  You will need to get your results back first before deciding on which route to take.  Good luck, I hope its not too bad and there is a treatment option available for you.

William,

Hi, sorry about the way you have been treated.  Unfortunately, that does happen to some of us.  Hopefully, you will get a good OS that will actually be helpful and give you some treatment options.  Many have had good luck taking glucosamine & chondroitin tablets so that is something that you might try also.

Good luck,

Shade
