Meniscus Problem Starting Or Just Me?
« on: February 23, 2003, 09:36:52 AM »
Hi

Just hope some of the more experience members of this area could give me some advice.

I've been having a nagging pain behond the left knee, on the medial side following falling down the stairs and twisting it, not badly but enough for it to hurt instantly.

Since then, have been plagued by locking, a dull ache in the posterior medial area and a horribe pain in the same place upon waking up.

Just to mention, sore to squat and to weightbear too mcuh.

Does this sound like cartilidge problems or just a temporary inflammtion.

Thanks
Iona

Hey Iona

I had locking only one time and it was a meniscal tear, but very small...

If I had to do it over again, I would not have had it trimmed, as I think that opened up a whole other can of worms (chondro, quad atrophy, etc.)

I got some orthotics to support my high arches and that has helped immensely...Hope you get to feeling better soon! Susan

It kinda sounds like cartilage problems. You would get pain from swelling and it does weaken your muscles with just a bit of fluid in your knee. Stiffness from swelling could be why it is locking or it could be from a piece of cartilage. My meniscus flipped over on my while I was sleeping? The best way to see if it's swelling or meniscus is to try to get rid of the swelling by icing or cooling your knee a few times a day, elevating your knee when you sleep, and by taking it easy. I've even use multiple ice packs or cold packs so I can use one while the other one freezes.

Thank you both for your replies.

Had the GP check it out and he thought there **MIGHT** be a tear or a floater but he is not sending me for an MRI because I am having surgery on the knee in question fairly shortly anyhow.

I'm a great believer in the power of Ice and it really has helped in this case
