Does anyone take Glucosamine?
« on: August 09, 2005, 07:42:03 PM »
I recently bought some vegetarian glucosamine to aid in my healing; I was wondering if anyone took it along with their NSAIDs. I wouldn't want to take anything that would cause a strange interaction. I am taking ibuprofen 800s and darvocets. Should I contact my doctor about this or just start taking the glucosamine?

check out the nutritional supplements section under arthritis.  There are a lot of threads discussing glucoasmine.  But many of us take it in conjuction with NSAIDS.  Not sure about the darvocet.  It is not something you take for a week or 2, then stop.  It is said to help the body maintain/grow articular cartilage cells.  It works best when taken with chondroitin.  And it will likely be at least a month or 2 before you  notice any change.
ACI was supposed to be 2/21/06.  On 6/29/06 Insurance co said have another scope, and if it still looks good, they'll ok the ACI.

I have been taking Glucosamine with Chondroitin for years. I am almost 68 and even though I have a torn miniscus for which I have to have surgery in January I my joints are really in good shape. It takes a period of time for it to start working so don't give up. A month or two is not unlikely. :D

I have not use darvocet but other types of pain killers with Glucosamine with no problems but that is me.

Hey Troy,

Great that at your age you have no joint problems.
I take Glucosamine now for about 4 months I am 46 now.
What amount do you take?
I hear that man should take about 1200-1400 mg is this true

Thanks,
Les

I recently started to take VegLife Vegetarian Glucosamine w. MSM and Hyaluronic Acid (and something else).  Not long enough to know if it works. A lot of people swear by the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin, but there is no veg. source of chondroitin.  I am looking for chondroitin separate from glucosamine; I figure if I have to use something non-veg., I will still be utilizing the veg. products as much as possible.  I plan to show the product to my rheumatologist this weekend.  She prescribed a topical cream with glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM (almost certainly not veg).  I started using it.  It goes very fast, and I am not even putting it on all my achy places!  Can't tell if it does anything yet either.  I don't understand how a topical cream can possibly penetrate my skin, fat and muscle, to work on the cartilege and bones.

Glucosamine is usually from shellfish, and so is chondroitin.

I started to take it about a month and 1/2 ago and now Ive noticed my skin on my knuckles have dried out and are peeling.  I stopped taking it and now my hands are good.

is that even normal?  I dont have an alergy to shellfish, on the contrary I loves it.  It was however a time release formula.

i have been taking  glucosamine  1500mg   in liqid form and using a glucosamine gel that you rub on to the knee i dont think the glucosamine has made any big difference but the gel   does seem to work better than the liquid

How can you tell if it is working or not? Several people mentioned that it takes a couple months to work. What happens when it starts working?

I've been taking glucosamine for about 10 weeks, since my ski accident. I have no idea if it's doing anything or not. Probably hard to tell cause I started it at the same time I got injured and, overall, I'm getting better. Hard to tell what role glucosamine is playing in my recovery. But, I am curious about this because I don't want to keep on taking it if it's not really helping at all.  (I do take it in conjunction with ibuprofen, as others mention here.)

Ruptured ACL, MCL sprain, bone bruise

I took glucosamine with condroitin but have come to think it's one of those things of if you think it's going to work, it's working.  Well, I was sceptical and have given it up as I didn't see any relief.
