1 year post op. today

Hey All,
Today I am one year post op. acl reconstruction and menisci repair! yay! I'm not sure why, but it feels really great lol. My knee feels great! No problems or anything when I run or play basketball and softball. It doesn't even feel like anything was ever wrong with it which I'm pretty sure is a good thing. My one year check up is coming up here soon. I believe it is on the 15th of this month. I'm really excited about that. I'm hoping to downgrade to a littler brace, the one I have now is a little bit of a pain the butt and besides I'm sick of hitting my teammates in the leg with it on accident, because I feel really bad because I know it has to hurt pretty bad. Well, I just thought I would let everyone know that there is an end to all this misery! Once it is all over you will feel great, just hang in there and don't give up! If you have any questions, ask away
-Catie-
Jblue and Gab... I was just messing around with this and decided to spice up my post! lol... I hope I didnt kill your eyes too badly

Good job, my knee is stable over one year post-op but I'm far from being able to say it doesn't feel like it never got injured/operated on.
Oh yeah, reading that almost gave me a seizure lol

Jblue,
Thank you for the support! I'm happy for me too hehe. I was very nervous about returning to sports, but it turned out to be better than expected. I am now back to leading a normal life which is awesome. I go back for my one year check up with the OS on the 18th! I'm super excited. Hang in there!

catie, how unstable was your knee before the op? how would you describe the pain/swelling post-op vs. pre-op?
thanks for posting.

Jblue,
Before the OP my knee wasn't that instable... like it didnt just give out on me when I was least expecting it, but I couldn't run or jump or anything like that. Walking was no problem, I had a limp, but my knee never gave out. The pain and swelling pre-op wasn't that bad, but it was there. It wasn't unbareable but I noticed it a lot. Post op pain and swelling were only bad for like 2 weeks and then everything seemed fine. I have pain like once a week if that now a days. I have a little swelling and my knee is still numb lol. But it's okay! lol. I got back to the OS on the 18th and i'm excited for that! Welp, i'm off to go shopping! Hang in there!

Congrats on being 1 year post op with no problems. That's great to hear that you're playing basketball and softball. Best of luck on the 15th. It will go fine.

Hey Catie,
Congrats on getting to a year post op. I hope everything goes ok for you.
How soon did you go back to playing basketball or any sports? Also what time of ACL Graft did you have? I am a netball player based in London and I miss it soooo much. I am only 8 days post op and had my first physio today it feels reasonably good. How long do you think it will take? The waiting is unbearable...
Do you still fear it might happen again or perhaps the other knee might go?
Cheers

Lulu,
Thanks for the congrats
I appreciate it! I started playing basketball around 7 months post op. I had an autograft. I think it will take you only about 7 months or so... well it should anyway. If you have no complications I strongly believe you should be back to net ball by 7 months!
The waiting is terrible lol I definitley know about that. I really dont think it will happen again or to the other knee. Everything feels strong and fine so I'm not concerned at all! Hang in there and if you have any questions just ask!

Thank you very much Catie for your advice. I have soooo many questions so I am sorry to hassle you but do you have any pain whatsoever now? How much physio did you do per week? Do you still do physio etc.
How exactly did you tear your ACL? Also do you recommend a brace? and for how long?
Thank you sooo much

Lulu,
Don't worry about asking questions! I don't mind at all!
I have no pain what so ever now. My knee really feels like I had nothing done to it. I did PT 2 days a week for 3 months. I don't do it now. I was done by late October 04'. I tore my ACL and medial/lateral meniscus running to first base in a softball game. When I hit the base my foot went left and my knee went right... awful feeling that I hope to never feel again. I do recommend a brace. I am wearing a DONJOY while playing sports and my OS has recommended that I wear it for for 2 years. Keep the questions coming I love to help people out!
Hang in there!!

I'm a softball and basketball player too!! I hurt my knee when someone slid into me at home plate. Felt like someone hit me with a baseball bat. Glad you're doing ok. I'm only 7 weeks post-op from my ACL recon. I hope mine turns out as good as yours. I can return to softball practice is another 2 months. Hurray!!

How can you return so soon? I won't be back to netball until Summer '06 (2 weeks post op). How much physio do you have per day/week?

Lulu,
I don't know how I returned so soon. To me it didn't seem so soon. I was around 7 months. I have PT 2 days a week for like an hour or more. I originally sheduled for 3, but since it didn't work out with my schedule I only did it 2 days a week. As you can tell dropping a day didn't screw up anything or make me lose time on getting back. Keep the questions coming. Hang in there!

Hey Catie,
Thanks for your replies. Have you heard of Hydrotherapy treatment? Would you recommend it? How soon did you go swimming? My Specialist has said I won't need a brace! Were you a Hammy recon or autograft? Did you get any knee discomfort when doing physio?
Thanks Lulu

ulu,
I have never heard of hydrotherapy treatment. Umm... I think I was swimming by 1 month post op... I only went that early because my incisions were healed and all was well. It really felt good to go! I was a hammy recon. I did not get any discomfort at all during PT... keep the questions coming and hang in there!

I can begin practicing hitting and throwing at month 4... I can't play at least until month 6. So I'm not really returning early but its just kind of part of my rehab. I only have pt 2 times a week but I have a home exercise routine that I do everyday. My doc says that being in the water is good therapy for your knee. You are weighless and your joints have less stress on them. I had a hamstring recon and its been great. I've only had one accident when I was walking down a hill and stepped arkwardly.l But off than that its been all good. Except for the fact that I can feel when a front is coming through. Then my knee aches so bad.

Hey Nails/Catie,
What do yo mean by a front coming through?
I am glad things are going well for you both. I am now 3 weeks and I have removed the steri strips today. The wound look good. Still needs a couple more days before it is completely closed. I cannot wait to get into the water. What sort of physio do you recommend for the water? Did you actually swim or just float about?
THANKS

What I mean by a front is when the weather changes. Like when the weather man says "There's a cold front coming through that should bring the temperatures down..." Its weird. It just started happening 2 weeks ago. And last Sunday I was sitting at softball practice ---- no not playing
---- and my knee started aching. And I was like a front is coming through. Sure enough when I got home I checked the weather forecast and a front passed the location where I was at the exact time my knee started aching terribily. I'm positive its the weather. Not everyone gets this. I think I'm one of the few.
I didn't do water therapy often because I didn't have access to a pool (never renewed my pool pass). My therapist said that it would be good for me. But she also didn't allow me to do it until later. When I went on vacation, I did do some stuff in the pool. I just did my normal exercises, stretching and stuff like that. I didn't go over board or anything but my knee was definitely sore the next day. It didn't hurt or anything while I was in there though.
