  • im going wacko, with my tkr
greetings to all my knee buddies,

it has been a very long time since i have really sat down and posted anything about my knee.  it is so depressing for me............

i'd like to say welcome to all the thousands of new members, it saddens me to see so many people with such horrible knees, my heart goes out to each one of you.  knees are not fun!!!!!

if you look at my signature space, you can see i have had about 6 surgeries in the past 1.5 years, all but two being related to osteomyllitis and staph infection.

my last surgery in january 2005 was lysis of adhesions, and now the scar tissue is developing again, so far i've had 4 loa's in a year.  i'm just so sick of scar tissue.  it is ruining my life .......literally.  i have to take a functional capacity evaluation to determine my level of function in the work place.  has anyone had this evaluation, please write to me about it if you could.  Also my os and pain mgmt. doc believe i should apply for disability benefits.  So i guess they have declared me disabled at 42. :'(  what a blow.  but i wont get into that, it makes me so so sad.

i just cant function anymore, i am so worn down and exhausted from so many surgeries so close together and now only 2 months from my last loa i'm looking at another one.  i just really wish i didnt have a leg,  i'm serious, because i cant do anything with my leg now, so why not, the pain would go away wouldnt it?  i know that is a horrible thing to say, but i honestly feel that way.  please dont judge me for saying that.  i'm really at the point where i just want to start using my wheelchair all the time.  but i cant do that.  So what do i do, after having my life ripped away from me.  it is so hard to cope with such deep constant pain.  i wish i could have that permanent smile come back on my face, instead of whincing or frowning all the time.  i wish i could just sit down and laugh so hard with tears pouring down my face.  how do you do that when you hurt so much?  my rehab is so non existent, I was told there isnt anything else that can be done for me, that my knee is permanently going to be in constant pain.  I take 5 ms cotins, and 5 immediate release morophine pills a day!!!!!  e stim is not an option cause of staph, so i'm at the end of it all, nothing left to do except keep having loa's every couple of months.

thanks for listening to me,
it really has been a rough, tiring, painful, stressful journey.  i thought when i had my tkr i'd be good to go, but my ostoemyllitis and staph and the major assults from my previous surgerys have left me damaged goods.

hope you kids have a good weekend,
love you all,
ellen

Hi Ellen,

Sorry to hear that there's yet another victim of scar tissue...

I do not know your full knee story, but are you seeing someone who specializes in arthrofibrosis?
I can empathize with you.  My knee has messed up my life... and every day that I am not "normal"
is another day screwed up.  I think that a lot of people here have had their lives fall into pieces because
of their knee.  But, if you aren't seeing an arthrofibrosis doctor, please do... there may
be more hope than you know.

Ellen, Is your prosthesis still in place? DId you develop the staph infection post TKR or what? I had my MRSA infection prior to the TKR, but seriously believe, along with one of the consultants I saw, that I still have an insidious infection of the joint, and esp the femur. When I have a scan  the bones light up like a CHristmas Tree.BUT they keep saying things like poor bonequality as opposed as to acute infection, Keep in touch,Teresa
On going instrumentation failure, chronic infection,
Arthroscopes Left 11 Right 2, MRSA, L TKR  ,  Revision, LR x5, Medial and lateral meniscus repair, Broken prosthesis
Osteochondral Fracture, untreated 6 mths. Revision new tkr 01-07 awaiting new hip and right knee
R TKR pending

Ellen,

I'm about your age, and I can't imagine how the future must look to you.  I've had some success with my last surgery, but I know my knee will not be the same and I'm going to have to re-evaluate what normal will be.  I understand how you might want to just get rid of that leg.  Most of have those days and we're not in the shape you're in.  I've seen it here before, and if there's any place you can vent those feelings, it's here.  Before my last surgery, I was willing to get a TKR.  (I've had second thoughts after being on this site for a while!)  Hopefully, it won't come to that.  I would second jennifer's thoughts on the right dr if you haven't already gone there.

Try to take care of the rest of yourself so you can gain some strength.

Thank you all for your replies.

Susan, thank you for understanding how I feel.  It really has been a very rough road.  I swear knowing what I know now, I dont think I would EVER have had my first surgery.  It just seems like if you have one you will need more.  What was your last surgery?  As far as a tkr, wait until you just cant stand it anymore.  I have been told by so many people in the medical feild I am too young to have had this done.  Of course they dont know my history with a bone infection, but anyway they say if i'm less active then i can buy more time before i have to have a revision.  but by the time i'm 60 i probably wont be able to walk.  I have been planning for that day.  i know it sounds crazy, but there are things I would like to do before that happens.

Theresa, thanks for your reply.  You probably dont remember, but you and I have sent messages back and forth regarding malpractice/negligence.  my infection is what caused me to need a tkr yes, my prosthesis is still in.  and it is okay and tracks fine, it is not loose.  What is your pain like?  What does MSRA stand for?  On my ceratec scan, i have the same results, but I do not believe my infection has reared itself,  My OS is on top of the situation, since his partner let me go untreated for aiout 2 weeks when the staph first occured.

thanks for your kind words and support, they mean alot and it is also nice to know that i can rant and rave, and not be judged for it, that is what makes this forum such a safe place.

Hope you guys have a great Sunday,

ellen

???
Hi, I am in the same situation as you. I have had 5 surgeries in the past 4 years, My last one being a LTKR in February of this year. I started out great, after a month I was walking without without any help, and my range was great. I could get around on a recumbandt bike too. I woke up one morning and my knee was extreamlly swollen, I went to the Dr. to have blood work to see if there was an infection. No I didn't, Dr. said I over did it. Siince then everything has gone downhill. I have lost range of motion, and can't walk without my cain or crutches. I also have extreme pain down the outside of my leg. I have been to the Dr. about 5 times since my surgery. This week he is going to do new exrays to see if there is any change since the ones last taken after a month. Last week they did a steroid injection, and I had no relief. He said he might have to go in with another scope to see whats going on. I think it's either scar tissue or something wrong with the new knee, because the majority of pain is right across from where the tibia bone was cut for the new knee. It radiates down the outside of the knee. I also can't walk after sitting, It takes me alot of hobbeling to get around. My foot on my other leg has Plantar fashitis (spelling) heel pain, and both of my hips hurt. I'm so sick of this, I am only 44 years young and have an 8 year old to deal with. I also own a daycare center and have 6-8 kids here with me every day. I have two adult children besides, and I can't depend on them or my husband all the time. Somethimes when I go in or call the nurse I think they think it's all in my head. Can anyone reply to this to give me some advice???? Please help with any information you might have for me.
Jacque

I have had three scopes, one with a lateral release, others to remove tears of the meniscus and arthritis, a fulkerson osteotomy, and lastly A LTKR,
Jacque
left knee surgeries, two scopes for torn meniscus, arthritis and patella scraping, another scope for a lateral release and another torn meniscus, Fulkerson Osteotomy, and finally LTKR last Feb. 5 surgeries in 4 years.

Hi Ellen

I am a 35 year old man and I also have arthofibrosis.  I am currently about 2 1/2 months post op from my last debridement and all my scar tissue came back.  I can't walk normal, I walk with a stiff leg and if I do that for a long time I get sharp pains around and behind me knee.  I can ride my bike around town, which actually gives me hope I can walk normal someday.  I did have a functional capacity evaluation when I was being considered for long tern disability.  It consists of picking up a box with weights and placing it on the floor, then placing it back on a shelf, then add more weight and repeat to a level of weight you can handle.  They want you to use your legs to lift, but I had to do it stiff legged because I cant bend my knee that quick.  Also hand eye coordination placing nuts on bolts, climbing a ladder ever other rung, but I had to go up ever rung at a time because of the stiff knee, standing and sitting for about 2 minutes then you have to tell them the pain level you are in.  Climbing up steps I belive it was twenty five steps and get timed how long it takes you, push and pull a weighted sled back and forth as they add weight to it to see how much you can do, knelling, and there might be another task I dont remember.  But the ones I stated aren't in order.

I have to take another evaluation test because I want to go back to work.  If I'm not back to work by Aug. I'm terminated.  The company I work for gave me a year to return to work from the date of my accident.  I had ACL and menisectomy in 8/04, knee minipulation 12/04, knee debridement 3/05, and booted out of therapy about 5-6 times because they said theres nothing more they can do for me.  They told me I may have to live with this the rest of my life.  But anyway I hope I can do good enough so they let me back to work, I would like to work 6-12 months and then get a surgery done by Dr. Wojyts in Ann Arbor, MI.  They would then give me another 6 months off for the surgery. Standing all day doesn't bother me to bad, its sitting with my leg bent that hurts so bad.

I know how tuff it is to get through this, I'm going through alot of pain myself, try to fight it and tell yourself you can do it.  I have alot of motivation to get back to work I have 4 sons and a stay at home wife that takes care of the kids.  I take about 20 advil a day for the swelling and pain, it seems to help a little so I can get through the day.  I noticed your name is Musky/Pike is that because you like to fish them?  I do.  I love to fish and to hunt, ride dirt bike, but I sold it because I cant ride it no more, cant kick start it with my bad knee, rollerblade, played hockey in the past, I belive alot of these I will never be able to do.  But I must move on with my life and do the best that I can.

Take Care and Good Luke with everything

Hi Ellen - thanks for sharing; it's tough for many of us, but luck certainly hasn't visited your house anytime recently.  Don't know who your OS is but if seeing a specialist is an option for you, some here have improved their luck a little.  Glad you're seeing a pain med doc - at least your OS has recognized it's not just in your head.  I definitely agree, I think many times that the choice to have this surgery was the worst decision that I've made so far.  Funny for me though, I don't think there was any way realistically I would've chosen to not have the surgery.  It's tough know the future, either the good things or the bad stuff.

hang in there and hope you keep posting, Alex

Hi Ellen,

Sorry for the delay in posting.  My last surgery was lysis of adhesions, anterior interval release and synovectomy.  Apparently the first OS missed a torn meniscus during his second surgery on me which caused my knee to bleed almost every week for 6 months. :o  This created mucho scar tissue.

Thankfully, this last surgery has got me to the place where I can live life!  Not without pain, but enough that I haven't been posting; I've been catching up.  I really understand those of you like Jacque who are tired of relying on family members for the simplest of tasks.  I spent almost 3 months on crutches before and after the last surgery. Before that, I would carry crutches in my car because I never knew when my knee would swell.  The first OS told me it was arthritis.  A second opinion in December revealed that the swelling was due to blood in the knee which led me here and to answers.

I have to say that although I've not posted in the success section out of superstition of jinxing myself, that going to a arthrofibrosis specialist (mine is in Vail, CO) and getting in as soon as I figured out (from this site!) that scar tissure was the problem has saved me from being a horror story on this site.  I'm still trying to rehab the muscles in my leg to the point of before the second surgery, and this will take time.  I'm hoping to be hiking again, soon, although I'll really have to take it easy.

Ellen,  let us know how you are doing.
