female related post-op question
« on: November 20, 2006, 04:27:47 AM »
so, just a warning to men on the board...i'm sure you are all a lot more mature than high schoolers, but I just thought I should put a disclaimer...this mgith be slightly awkward for the men.

i'm having my surgery on wednesday at it will be that time of the month. does anyone have any suggestions for how to get tampons in? I'm sorry as this is a pretty awkward question for me to ask, but I think its a pretty important one!

How have other people delt with this?

i have always been lucky enough to not be on mine during all 5 of my surgeries... that is just plain luck!!!!  but i've always wondered about what happens if you are on it....  i would also like an answer to that question, just in case  ::)

I am not sure the doctors want tampons in during surgery.  (toxic shock syndrome)    > I also think the scrub nurses check before they begin surgery.  They rather you have a pad on with a belt.

But if you are venturing into a product you are not sure of. There are directions on the boxes and I am sure if you wanted to ask a nurse.. maybe your school nurse she would be able to give that detail to you.

haha knee deep your response made me laugh, you put it so diplomatically (going to the nurse etc). i am used to using tampons, i'm an athlete so i basically live in them. i'm just concerned about putting them in post-op. I figure i'll be NWB and in an ROM brace, so it'll be difficult to position myself properly,

Personally, I would use pads....it will be easier.  Also, I found it much easier to wear a dress because it's hard pulling up pants while hopping on one leg.

pads just make me feel so dirty  :(
unfortunately, my school doesn't have dresses or skirts as part of our uniform. we have "skorts" which have built in shorts. i think i may end up buying a pair of school pants and chopping one leg off so i can at least have one leg covered by the pants. i know it doesn't get very cold where i live, but  i get cold easily

Mine was a day surgery thing and they had no problem with the tampon.  As for changing,  I just did it.  I got used to doing lots of weird things to get around the brace.  I know I had to take my drawers and or pants  completely off my good leg to pee or change a tampon.  (I had no or limited motion of the knee so for the most part it was out straight.)  You get to know all the good bathrooms.

Good Luck

2/06 to 4/06 attempting to convince them something was not right
4/26/06 recheck with surgeon: original break not healing and wires from surgery broken
5/26/06 Second Surgery
8/16/06 no more brace
