Vastus medialis obliquus
This is the lower part of the vastus medialis muscle, where the fibres are oblique, tending to act as guy ropes pulling the patella towards the medial side, and preventing it from dislocating out of its groove in the femur. It is commonly referred to as the VMO.
After knee injury or surgery, special efforts are usually made to strengthen this muscle.
