My spine surgery...and the time after..

So here I were ready to go to emergency spine surgery as soon as there was a OR time free. Time went on and after 24 hours I was getting wheeled up to OR. Outside they discovered that they had forget my allergy against latex and had to put out new instruments. So I had to wait outside OR 45 minutes. Meanwhile a cute nurse had me write down a cucumber recipe to keep me occupied.

With all meds in my body that took time... .

RSD-the last resource in treatment

After 1 month with epidural and then back on painmeds that didn't do anything more then making me high I was set to go to the other hospital for to get my Spinal morphine pump inserted. Hell was that I needed to shower twice without my Immobilizier. They had to be 3 persons to help me shower to get me somewhat comfortable. I got injections before and after the showers. I don't think I ever have cried and lost my breathe so many times like I did now. An ambulance came and picked me up early. 2 nice young guys making me laugh when the bumps in the road made me cry.

To live with RSD..is that possible...??

So there I were...just found out that I have RSD. For you how don't know RSD you can more or less say that is a neurological disorder. Simply say..you experience awful severe pain that shouldn't be there as the injury is healed. That idiot to OS told me that I had to live with this pain that I wanted to get rid of. Every second is a fight...I just want to die. I asked them to chop the leg off. NO that won't help is the answer. If pain had been the only problem. Along with the pain I have huge swelling in my entire left leg, can't wear any kind of shoes. The skin is very sensitive.

RSD- when evil in my life started

RSD, when that evil arrived to my life I thought life was over. Everything started about 10 years ago with just slipping on ice and twisting my knee. No fall or something like that. That was the beginning of the journey of numerous exams, surgeries, PT sessions, injections, painmeds and lots of trouble. Nothing but trouble (maybe that why some fellow kneegeeks call me Trouble). After about 3 years and meeting different kind of docs and in and out on hospitals, I was really drugged down at this point, I was sent to a painmanagement team in the biggest city in my country.

The pattern in unmanaged or unmanageable CRPS

The key with managing CRPS is to catch the problem early (in Stage I) and treat it appropriately.

If the situation in Stage I does not resolve and the clinician fails to appreciate the situation, a tug of will often follows between the physiotherapist pushing the patient to 'try harder' and the patient clinging to their crutches, becoming more and more distressed with the unremitting discomfort. The patient may be accused of 'putting it on' for the sake of getting stronger addictive painkillers.

The 'reflex arc' and how it relates to CRPS

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) was previously known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) and before that it was called 'Causalgia', 'Algodystrophy' or 'Sudeck's atrophy'.

Who is vulnerable to CRPS?

There definitely seems to be a particular type of person who gets CRPS (RSD). Classically the person is aged 40-60, but on the KNEEguru bulletin board we seem to have frequently had CRPS patients who are -
