Synovial joint

Synovial joints are movable joints that contain a lubricating fluid called synovial fluid and have articular cartilage to keep the ends of the moving bones separate from each other.

The majority of joints in the body are ‘synovial joints’. The knee is an example of a synovial joint. Movement at the joint is created by muscle contraction and the joint is kept stable by ligaments.
