1990 - 1992: SHO and Registrar doing Basic Surgical Training, (Manchester, Peterborough and Dundee).



1992 – 1993: Non-Career grade Orthopaedic Registrar in Orthopaedic Surgery

1993 - 1998: Career- then Specialist (Calman) Registrar in Orthopaedic Surgery

Clinical experience:

• Specialist training, covering all the major sub specialist branches of orthopaedic surgery.

• Comprehensive experience in the management of all levels of orthopaedic trauma.

• Member of the multidisciplinary Trauma Team (1993-1997). This was a rapid response team to deal with regional major incidents.

• Extensive experience in both cemented and uncemented arthroplasty of the lower limb.

Audit experience

• Audit of open tibial fracture management in Tayside in 1994. The results of this audit led to a change in practice by the unit that year.

• Responsible for managing In-patient Outcome Audit for the Orthopaedic Unit 1996-1998.

Management experience

• Senior Resident supervising duty rotas, leave and clinic cover 1998.

Sub-specialist experience gained in this year includes:

Clinical experience:

• Extensive range of operative arthroscopic procedures including the treatment of the young osteoarthritic knee.

• Diagnosis and management of a comprehensive range of acquired lower limb soft tissue disorders.

• Cartilage Repair Surgery.

• Management of exercise induced leg pain.

Management and audit experience

• Member of UK athletics steering group on anti-doping policy.

• Member of Oswestry ACT working group. This group meets weekly and audits laboratory and clinical outcomes of ACT.

Research

• ACT: Involvement in numerous projects studying the mechanical properties of the periosteal patch and its behaviour in vivo during the first weeks of implantation.

• I developed a dynamic compartment pressure monitoring system for use during exercise.

• I have set up a specimen bank and database for the study of synovial fluid changes following injury and it’s relationship with OA. See below.

Teaching

• Convenor of and lecturer on FRCS (Orth) examination preparation courses April and November 1999.

• Supervision of oversees visiting fellows in Sport Surgery.

Management and audit experience

• Member of Oswestry ACT working group. This group meets weekly and audits laboratory and clinical outcomes of ACT.

• Member of Eurocell working group on Harvest, Transport and Isolation of Chondrocytes for ACT.

Teaching and education

• Oswestry is a sub –specialist elective Orthopaedic Hospital. I have therefore made proactive efforts to keep my knowledge of Trauma and Orthpaedics in general current by acting as convener of and lecturer on FRCS (Orth) examination preparation courses 2000/01 and leading journal review club. Furthermore, I attended meetings and training courses, locally and nationally on Knee Surgery and Trauma.

• Organiser of Operative Arthroscopy course.

• Basic Arthroscopy teaching course faculty.

• Weekly journal club. (Consultant in charge)



2002-current Consultant Orthopaedic Sports Injury Surgeon

Friarage Hospital Northallerton & Duchess of Kent Military

• Complex knee ligament instabilities.

• Revision knee ligament reconstruction.

• Cartilage repair and transplantation.

• Meniscal repair and transplantation.

• Exercise induced leg pain treatment.

• Compartment pressure studies monitoring under exercise conditions.



The remit of my appointment was to improve/increase the level of service to the MDHU Secondary Care in Orthopaedic Surgery. My NHS practice revolves around the treatment of defence service personnel and civilian patients with sports (activity related) injuries.



Over the last two years, I have adapted my post to serve the above needs by:

• Developing diagnostic and treatment alogorithums for patients with sports injuries.

• Developing a clinical service with state-of-the art equipment and facilities to perform arthroscopic surgery and soft tissue reconstruction to the highest level.

Audit

• Working with ‘Global Patient Outcome Systems’ for the development of a Sports Injury Module.

Research:

• Completed a Pilot Study on the Management of ankle instability.

• Lead Clinician for the North of England in two Multi-Centre studies on Autologous Chondrocyte transplantation.

- I got South Tees NHS Trust accepted as the North of England

centre for the ‘Active’ MRC funded study on ACT. This study

will run over 12 years and will bring direct financial rewards to

the trust for

• Treatment costs.

• Research personnel.

Teaching:

• Lecturing regularly for professional courses on ligament. Reconstruction and other sports injuries.

• Lectures to various orthopaedic and other medical groups (see under “Presentations”).

Management:

• Academic Secretary for UK Meniscal Study Group.

• Member of local MAC.

• By efficient management of the Sports Injury Team, I have kept down patient waiting times and average wait for surgery to the best in the Directorate. The team performs in excess of 700 surgical procedures per year.
