Knee anatomy - the patella

The patella bone lies within the substance of the tendon of the quadriceps muscle and is in contact with the femur bone behind it.

This is the area where the patella comes into contact with the underlying femur bone is called the 'patello-femoral' joint. The red circles below show two different views of the patello-femoral jointindicate the patello-femoral joint.
