Kneecap (patellar) problems can cause a lot of misery, not the least because subtle changes in the alignment of the kneecap and the structures that affect it may lead to significant pain and disability. The enigmatic nature of the pain - sometimes there and sometimes not - makes evaluation difficult and frustrating for doctor and patient.

If people suffering with kneecap problems can build an understanding of the structures and forces influencing the kneecap then they are better placed to adjust them and make wise choices about management. Kneecap problems cannot be understood without a working knowledge of the factors affecting kneecap alignment. Although the concepts are simple, in practice the management is not.
