Hoffa's disease

A disorder of the fat pad, characterised by pain at the front of the knee, and often an effusion and signs suggestive of ligament instability.

Usually the consequence of trauma to the front of the knee, particularly if the fat pad is large. The fat pad gets nipped between tibia and femur when the bent knee is extended sudddenly (ie Hoffa's test elicits a positive Hoffa's sign).
