Excessive lateral pressure syndrome
Excessive lateral pressure syndrome is a collection of symptoms and signs related to the kneecap being tilted due to tight restraints (lateral retinaculum) on the outer side side of the joint between the kneecap and the femur - a condition known as 'lateral tilt'. This causes pain and joint cartilage damage.
In the first instance patellar tilt should be managed with physiotherapy, with deep massage on the tight side and patellar mobilisation stretches, combined with quadriceps and hamstring muscle exercises.
If these do not relieve the ELPS a surgical lateral release (lateral retinacular release) procedure would likely be the next step.
