A condition where bone forms in muscle.
After a contusion a complication of the healing process occurs where the bruise (haematoma) calcifies and bone starts to form in the muscle. This bone formation can usually be seen on x-ray. The reason why the bone starts to form isn't known but it is thought that the greater the severity of the injury the increased risk of developing myositis ossificans.
Also referred to as 'heterotopic bone formation' or 'heterotopic ossification'.
