'Hyper' means 'too much'. 'Trophy' means 'growth'. The word hypertrophy means excessive growth.
When a body tissue or body part is described as 'hypertrophic' it means that it is bigger than it should be, eg an hypertrophic scar is an abnormaly thickened scar.
