Intramuscular haematoma

'Intra' is within and 'haematoma' is bleeding so an intramuscular haematoma is bleeding within the muscle tissues.

When there is a direct blow to muscle a local compression injury can occur and bleeding results. There are two types of muscle bleeding or haematoma - intramuscular and intermuscular. An intramuscular haematoma is when the muscle fascia ('casing') does not let the blood escape so it stays in the muscle longer often increasing pressure in the muscle. Swelling and pain generally lasts more than 48 hours.
