Iliotibial band friction syndrome

An overuse disorder, where with exercise a person experiences pain on the outer side of the knee over the bony prominence called the femoral epicondyle.

In overuse situations, eg marathon running, particularly if the adductor muscles are weak and the iliotibial band tight, the band rubs over the femoral epicondyle and becomes irritated.

Prevention includes ITB stretching, strengthening the adductor muscles, attention to running footware (especially preventing foot pronation), building up fitness gradually.

Treatment in mild cases includes rest, icing, anti-inflammatory medication, electrical therapy. In more severe cases steroid injections into the area may be necessary.
