Hyperextension injury

Injury from excessive hyperextension (knee bending backwards).

In an hyperextension injury the forcible backward bending can cause damage to a number of structures -

  • the bones (contusion) (ie bruising)
  • one or both cruciate ligaments
  • the fat pad
  • the popliteus tendon
  • the meniscus
