Hemicallotasis
Hemicallotasis is a procedure where the bone (usually upper tibia) is cut through half its width and then the two parts are slowly distracted (pulled apart) using a special apparatus called an external fixator.
New bone is thereby stimulated to fill the gap and the bone can be angled to change the forces going through it - usually to avoid pressure on a surface damaged by arthritis. This process is called ‘callus distraction’.
