Gore-Tex
Gore-Tex is the trade name for expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It was introduced in the 1980s into knee surgery in the production of prosthetic ligaments to replace the cruciate, but it is now infrequently used.
The 1980s but an exciting period in cruciate ligament surgery, as the introduction of a number of competing synthetic materials led to the rapid development of systems and instrumentation for replacing the cruciate ligament.
The systems opened the door to the use of autograft and allograft, but synthetic ligaments are rarely used nowadays.
