Flexion contracture

A flexion contracture or flexion deformity is when someone is not able to fully straighten their leg either actively or passively.

Flexion contractures can be caused by -

  • A piece of bone or othe tissue getting in the way and blocking movement.
  • Knee replacement components in the wrong position.
  • Scar tissue restricting any further straightening.
  • Extreme tightness in the hamstring muscles that cross the back of the knee.

If someone has a flexion contracture they are likely to limp as they walk and they will find normal everday activities more demanding in terms of the energy needed.
