Chondritis
Chondritis is a general term which means 'inflammation of the cartilage joint surface'.
Probably the term 'chondrosis' should be used instead of 'chondritis', as 'itis' means 'inflamed', and cartilage softens and degenerates under stress rather than becoming 'inflamed'. Chondrosis just implies that there is an abnormal process going on in the joint cartilage.
Osteo-chondritis dissecans
This is a specific type of chondritis, also involving the underlying bone - a poorly-understood condition where a focal area of bone dies, and the overlying cartilage may also disintegrate and collapse. Again, the cartilage does not actually become inflamed. so 'chondritis' is a misnomer here, too.
