Bursitis

Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa, a lubricated pouch or sac in regions where there is a lot of movement between muscles and bone.

The main types of bursitis include:

  • pre-patellar bursitis - often called ‘housemaid’ knee. This is quite common in people who spend a lot of time on their hands and knees.
  • infrapatellar bursitis - also called ‘clergyman’s knee’. Here the precipitating activity is more upright kneeling.
  • pes anserine bursitis - also called ‘breast-strokers’ knee’. It is common in swimmers.
