Bursitis
Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa, a lubricated pouch or sac in regions where there is a lot of movement between muscles and bone.
The main types of bursitis include:
- pre-patellar bursitis - often called 'housemaid's knee'. This is quite common in people who spend a lot of time on their hands and knees.
- infrapatellar bursitis - also called 'clergyman's knee'. Here the precipitating activity is more upright kneeling.
- pes anserine bursitis - also called 'breast-stroker's knee'. It is common in swimmers.
