Autograft
'Autografts' are grafts (transplants) taken from one part of a person's body and transferred to another part of the same person. Compare - allograft (from a donor body), and xenograft (graft of animal tissue).
The benefit of using the body’s own tissue for repair of damaged structures is that there is no rejection, and little risk of infection, and the time between ‘harvest’ and implant is minimised.
Autografts are extensively used in the knee for cruciate ligament reconstruction and joint cartilage repair.
