An anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is an operation to replace a damaged anterior cruciate ligament with a ligament graft.

There are a number of options for the graft. These include bone-patellar tendon-bone graft, hamstrings graft and quadriceps tendon graft. The graft is usually taken from the patient (this is called an autograft) but may come from a tissue bank (the graft is then called an allograft). In certain circumstances a synthetic graft might be used, but this is now very uncommon.
